I moved to the north side of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2004 after my romantic relationship disintegrated. I heard something was happening there.....and that rent was cheap. Walking off the Bedford Ave. subway, I knew immediately that the neighborhood would be 'home.' Graffiti, little bookshops and coffee joints, oddball characters and loft-living above a noodle factory.
Since the fatal rezoning of 2005, I've watched the neighborhood change. Gentrification has pushed out many long-time residents and the creative types that followed. Steel and glass towers have risen amongst the brownstones. Duane Reade pharmacy now has 2 locations as Mom and Pop have sold or can no longer afford lease extensions.
Slowly, this unique community is being transformed. Another New York City neighborhood......lost_in_transition.
