_sandy slams gotham
On October 29, 2012, three weather systems converged just south of Atlantic City, New Jersey to create Superstorm Sandy.....a monster hurricane that devastated New York and the surrounding area.
Public transportation was shut down, schools closed and storefronts shuttered. The city came to a standstill as 14-foot tides overwhelmed Manhattan and gutted areas of Staten Island and Brooklyn. Dozens died and thousands were left homeless. Initial estimates pegged the damage at $42 billion.
Despite the devastation, New Yorkers came together....as they always do in times of strife and turmoil. State and Federal government agencies helped as they could but it was on the local level where most assistance came....neighbor helping neighbor.
