Occupy.Inside.Out Participates in JR’s TED Prize Wish:

The Inside Out Project Stands Up for People as the solution to the economic and political system, New York, NY/USA (10/19/2011) —

When TED Prize winner JR announced his wish to turn the world “Inside Out,” inviting people around the globe to share a photo portrait along with a statement about what they stand for, occupy.inside.out in New York stood up to participate. Ninety-nine people offered to pose for a portrait of themselves, and called attention to the pitfalls of the current economic and democratic situation, pointing to the everyday 99% of the population as the solution. The initiative is inviting anyone to do the same.

We wanted to offer people a way to share their stories." said Steven Greaves, the photographer behind the project. "The Occupy Wall Street movement has been portrayed as a mob of discontent. While there are definitely complaints, that’s not the whole story. What we’ve experienced is much to the contrary: veterans, priests, doctors, lawyers and other everyday people who are more than just angry. These people work every day of their lives and are starting to become empowered to do something about the injustices that they see around them and in the system."

While outcomes and actions are just starting to emerge from the protests, occupy.inside.out wanted to give these stories and the energy going into Occupy Wall Street another positive outlet. In following with the democratic undertones of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the initiative chose to open up the process by leveraging the Inside Out Platform. “What better way to get the positive side of the story out than by celebrating the beautiful everyday people that the Occupy Wall Street represents and putting the power of expression in their hands?" asked Steven. "We wanted to offer them and anyone around the world the opportunity to share their stories, solutions and to show the world what the face of change looks like. It is not simply the hippies, eccentrics and anarchists that the mainstream media would like to portray. We hope to challenge these media outlets and promote "the news" through art.”

The initiative sets out to create a tide of positivity and solution-oriented dialogue around the protests. “This movement isn’t just about complaining. We want to show people, in a very public way, the presence of the 99%." said Charles Meacham, Steven's assistant. "To remind people that we are the majority-- that we are the solution. I think everyone involved in Occupy Wall Street is just starting to understand that. We look forward to supporting and serving as a catalyst toward a positive dialogue around solutions and our collective power and obligation to create them,” said Meacham.
